France is not only synonymous with rich culture and history, but also with world-class academic institutions. If you dream of pursuing your higher education in France, the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program is the gold standard.

Developed by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, this prestigious program enables French higher education institutions to attract the brightest international students to their Master's and PhD programs. Let's break down everything you need to know about cracking the Eiffel Scholarship for the 2026 academic intake.

What is the Eiffel Scholarship?

The Eiffel Scholarship is an elite funding program dedicated to shaping future foreign decision-makers in private and public sectors. It focuses strictly on encouraging applications from emerging countries at the Master’s level, and from emerging/industrialized countries at the PhD level.

Crucial Detail: You cannot apply directly to the Eiffel Scholarship program on your own. Your application must be submitted on your behalf by a French higher education institution that has accepted you. If you apply on your own, or if you apply through multiple universities simultaneously, your application will be instantly rejected.

Financial Value & Benefits

The Eiffel Scholarship is known for being incredibly generous, covering living expenses so you can focus entirely on your academic excellence.

The Funding Details

  • Master's Level: A monthly allowance of €1,181 (a maintenance allowance of €1,031 plus a stipend of €150).
  • PhD Level: A monthly allowance of €1,700.
  • Travel & Logistics: One international return trip to your home country, domestic train travel within France, and local transport assistance.
  • Health & Perks: Health insurance cover by Campus France and access to discounted cultural activities and housing.

Note on Tuition Fees: The Eiffel scholarship does not directly cover tuition fees. However, under French law, international students holding a French government scholarship are automatically exempt from paying registration fees at public universities.

Eligible Fields of Study

The scholarship is restricted to specific disciplines divided into two major disciplinary fields. You must fit into one of these to be nominated:

  • Science and Technology: Biology and Health; Ecological Transition; Mathematics and Digital Sciences; Engineering Sciences.
  • Humanities and Social Sciences: History, French language and civilization; Law and Political Science; Economics and Management.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for nomination by a French university, you must meet stringent criteria:

  • Nationality: You must be a foreign national. Candidates with dual nationality, of which one is French, are not eligible.
  • Age Limit: For Master's applicants, you must be 25 years old or younger during the application campaign. For PhD applicants, you must be 30 years old or younger.
  • Location: For Master's, candidates already studying in France are not eligible. For PhD, candidates studying abroad hold priority over those already in France.
  • Language: You must meet the language requirements (French or English, depending on the program) of the institution admitting you.
  • Previous Attempts: If you were nominated in previous years and rejected, you cannot apply again (even if changing universities or fields).

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Since the university has to nominate you, the timeline is much earlier than standard admissions. The official Eiffel deadline for universities is usually early January, meaning universities will set their internal deadlines for you between October and December of the previous year.

  1. Step 1: Contact French Universities (Sep-Oct)
Find a Master's or PhD program that fits the eligible fields. Reach out to the international relations department or program coordinator. Tell them explicitly you want to be considered for the Eiffel Scholarship.
  2. Step 2: Submit Internal Application (Oct-Nov)
Follow the university's specific internal procedure. They will require your transcripts, a strong CV, and a compelling statement of purpose outlining your career goals and how they align with France's interests.
  3. Step 3: University Selection & Nomination (Dec)
The university will review all requests and select only their very best candidates to nominate to Campus France.
  4. Step 4: Campus France Review (Jan-March)
If nominated, the university submits your file via the Campus France portal. The French Ministry then reviews all national nominations.
  5. Step 5: Results (April)
Campus France publishes the final list of laureates on their website.

Tips for a Strong Application

Eiffel is synonymous with "Excellence". To beat the fierce competition, your profile must stand out:

"The Eiffel jury heavily weighs your academic transcripts (you should be in the top 10% of your class) and the reputation of your home institution. However, your professional project—how your degree will shape your future impact in your home country—is the ultimate tiebreaker."
  • Nail the "Professional Project": This document is mandatory. Explain your 5-year and 10-year career goals. Show exactly how studying in France (and that specific university) is the missing puzzle piece to becoming a leader in your home country. Use our SOP Outliner Tool to structure this.
  • Aim for Prestige: Look for top-ranked French institutions (like Sciences Po, Sorbonne, École Polytechnique, or highly specialized engineering schools), as they have a long track record of successful Eiffel nominations.
  • Network with Professors (PhD): If you are applying for a PhD, securing a co-tutelle (joint supervision) with a well-connected French researcher is absolutely vital.
