The Erasmus Mundus scholarship 2027 is an EU-funded scholarship for international Master's degrees called Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM). There is no single application. You choose a programme in the official catalogue, apply to that programme directly, and you can apply to a maximum of three. Most programmes starting in September 2027 open between October and November 2026 and close between December 2026 and February 2027, so the window is open now.
One disclosure before we start. I won the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, not Erasmus Mundus. This guide is built from the official programme rules and published programme details, and I send you to the official sources wherever a number can change. Where my own experience applies, such as writing a motivation letter or choosing less competitive programmes, I say so.
What Is the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are international Master's programmes run by a consortium of universities in several countries. You study at no fewer than two of them, so one degree can take you through, say, Spain, Germany and Sweden. Programmes are full-time and usually last 12 to 24 months (60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits). The degree is awarded jointly or as multiple degrees, depending on the programme.
The scholarship is not a separate prize you apply for on its own. It is attached to each programme: you apply for admission and for the scholarship in the same application, and the consortium ranks candidates. Browse the official Erasmus Mundus catalogue to see every programme currently recruiting.
What Does the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Cover?
| Item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Tuition and participation costs | Covered for the full programme for scholarship holders |
| Monthly living allowance | Commonly listed at up to €1,400 per month for the programme length, up to 24 months |
| Travel and installation | Contributions that vary by programme and by your country of residence |
| Insurance | Included in the participation costs for scholarship holders |
| Mobility | Study periods in at least two countries |
Treat the amounts above as a guide, not a promise. Each consortium publishes its own funding terms, and they differ between partner-country and programme-country students. Read that page before you apply.
Who Can Apply for Erasmus Mundus in 2027?
Eligibility is set by each programme, but a few rules are common:
- You hold a Bachelor's degree, or are in the final year of one, in a field the programme accepts.
- You have not already received an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarship.
- You meet the programme's language requirement, usually English.
- There is no age limit and no universal minimum GPA from the EU. Competitive programmes still expect strong grades.
How to Apply for Erasmus Mundus, Step by Step
- Search the catalogue. Filter by subject and read the programme's own website, not a third-party summary.
- Shortlist up to three programmes. That is the maximum for one academic year. Pick at least one that fits your grades realistically.
- Check each programme's deadline and documents. They differ, and some programmes close in December.
- Prepare your documents early. Transcripts, reference letters and language certificates take weeks.
- Apply through each programme's portal. Submit at least a week before the deadline, since portals slow down on the last day.
- Watch your inbox. Consortia email shortlisted applicants about interviews, extra documents and results.
- Accept and start the visa process. Selected students receive instructions from the consortium.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027 Deadlines and Timeline
There is no single deadline. This is the typical pattern for the September 2027 intake:
| Stage | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Applications open | October – November 2026 |
| Most deadlines | December 2026 – February 2027 |
| Evaluation and interviews | February – April 2027 |
| Results | April – June 2027 |
| Visa process | June – August 2027 |
| Programme starts | September 2027 |
Some programmes close earlier or later than this. Write each deadline in a calendar the day you shortlist a programme.
Documents You Need
Bachelor's degree and transcripts
Proof of your degree and a full list of subjects and grades. Request official copies early, since universities can take weeks.
CV
Education, work or research experience, volunteering and projects. Keep it to one or two pages.
Motivation letter
The document that separates applicants with similar grades. See the section below.
Language certificate
IELTS, TOEFL or an accepted alternative such as a Medium of Instruction letter. Requirements differ, so check before booking a test. Our free IELTS Reading practice test is a good starting point.
Recommendation letters
Many programmes ask for academic or professional references. Ask your referees at least a month before the deadline.
Passport and programme-specific extras
Some consortia add a study plan, a research proposal or a portfolio. Read the application page for each programme.
How to Write an Erasmus Mundus Motivation Letter
A good letter answers four questions: why this programme, why this mix of universities and countries, what you will do with the degree, and why you over other applicants. Name specific modules, professors or labs. A paragraph that could be pasted into any application is wasted.
Do not write it the night before. I see applicants spend weeks on exam preparation and one evening on the letter, and it shows. Our free SOP Outliner gives you a structure to start from.
Mistakes That Cost Applicants the Scholarship
- Applying to one programme only. Competition is high. Using all three slots raises your odds.
- Choosing only famous programmes. Programmes in AI and data science get far more applicants than niche ones. Mix popular and less competitive options.
- Missing a programme-specific document. Incomplete applications are usually rejected without review.
- Relying on blog summaries. Including this one. Deadlines and funding change, so confirm on the programme website.
- Sending a generic letter. The same letter to three programmes reads as three weak letters.
Erasmus Mundus vs Stipendium Hungaricum
Both are fully funded, and many applicants try both. They work differently, and the difference matters for planning:
| Factor | Erasmus Mundus | Stipendium Hungaricum |
|---|---|---|
| Where you study | At least two countries | One country, Hungary |
| How you apply | Directly to each programme | Country nomination, then university, then Tempus Foundation |
| Degree levels | Master's only | Bachelor's, Master's, PhD |
| Applications allowed | Up to 3 programmes | 2 programme preferences |
If you want a Bachelor's degree, Erasmus Mundus is not an option, and our complete Stipendium Hungaricum application guide covers the route I took.
When You Should Not Apply to Erasmus Mundus
Skip it, or at least do not make it your only plan, in these cases. You want to stay in one city for the whole degree, because mobility between countries is compulsory. You cannot afford the upfront costs of visas and moving between countries before allowances arrive. You do not hold a Bachelor's degree yet and will not by the programme start. Or you are applying with one weak document set and no time to fix it before the deadline.
If any of these describe you, build a wider list. Our guides to the France Eiffel Excellence Scholarship and the Türkiye Bursları Scholarship are two solid alternatives.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027
Is the Erasmus Mundus scholarship 2027 fully funded?
Yes, for selected students. The scholarship covers the programme's participation costs (tuition), a monthly living allowance, and contributions towards travel and installation. The exact amounts depend on the programme and on whether you come from a partner or programme country, so read the funding section of your chosen programme.
How many Erasmus Mundus programmes can I apply to?
Up to three in the same academic year. Each application is separate, with its own documents and deadline, so plan your time before you commit to three.
When is the Erasmus Mundus scholarship 2027 deadline?
There is no single deadline. Each Joint Master sets its own, and most programmes starting in September 2027 open between October and November 2026 and close between December 2026 and February 2027. Check the official page of every programme you pick.
Do I need IELTS for Erasmus Mundus?
It depends on the programme. Many ask for IELTS, TOEFL or a similar certificate, and some accept a Medium of Instruction letter from your university. Check the language requirement on the programme website before you book a test.
Is there a minimum GPA or age limit?
The EU sets no universal minimum GPA and no age limit. Each consortium sets its own academic requirements, and selection is competitive and merit-based, so strong grades, relevant experience and a clear motivation letter all count.
Can I work part-time on an Erasmus Mundus scholarship?
Rules vary by programme and by the country where you are studying, because you move between at least two countries. Programmes are full-time, so treat any work as secondary and confirm the rules with your consortium.

Final Advice
Pick three programmes, calendar every deadline this week, and start the motivation letter before the language test. Most of the applicants who lose do so on preparation, not ability.
