Scholarship Overview — What Is the Invest Your Talent in Italy Scholarship?

The Invest Your Talent in Italy (IYT) Scholarship 2026 is a fully funded Italian government scholarship programme promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency (ICE/ITA) and Uni-Italia. Now in its 11th edition for 2026/2027, it is one of Italy's most distinctive and career-oriented scholarship programmes for international students.

Launched in 2005 with the dual aim of promoting intercultural exchange and fostering long-term economic ties between Italy and partner countries, IYT is fundamentally different from most academic scholarships because it combines a fully funded Master's degree with a mandatory internship at an Italian company. Selected scholars do not just study in Italy — they work inside some of Italy's most iconic companies and trade organisations for at least three months, gaining hands-on professional experience alongside their degree.

The programme covers three strategic fields — Engineering & Advanced Technologies, Architecture & Design, and Economics & Management — across more than 250 Master's degree courses offered by a network of top Italian universities. All courses are taught entirely in English, making the scholarship accessible to international students without Italian language proficiency, while also encouraging Italian language learning as part of the cultural integration component.

The IYT scholarship provides a €9,000 annual stipend (€1,000/month for 9 months) and a full tuition fee waiver. For two-year Laurea Magistrale (Master's) programmes, the scholarship can be renewed for a second year, subject to academic credit requirements. The application is submitted directly by students on the IYT online platform — no university nomination or intermediary is needed — making it one of the most directly accessible fully funded Italian government scholarships for international students.

Financial Package — What Does the IYT Scholarship Cover?

Here is a precise breakdown of every benefit and exclusion in the Invest Your Talent in Italy Scholarship for international students:

💰

Monthly Stipend

€1,000/month × 9 months

The IYT scholarship provides €1,000 per month for 9 months per academic year, totalling €9,000 gross annually. The stipend is paid quarterly — approximately €3,000 every three months. The first instalment is released after you enrol at the university and submit all required documents. Gross amount means Italian withholding taxes apply; net received is typically around €800–€900/month depending on your tax position.

🎓

Tuition Fee Waiver

Full — 100% Tuition Exempt

IYT scholarship holders are fully exempt from paying standard university tuition fees. The only mandatory costs payable are: the regional tax for the right to study (Diritto allo Studio) — €140, and the revenue stamp (marca da bollo / bollo virtuale) — €16. Total annual fixed cost to the student: approximately €156.

🇮🇹

Italian Language Course

Free — Mandatory Participation

A free Italian language and culture course is included in every IYT scholar's programme. Attendance is compulsory. This course runs before or during your studies and is provided by your university. Language immersion is a core part of the IYT philosophy — Italian knowledge significantly helps during the internship and daily life.

💼

Mandatory Internship

3+ Months at Italian Company

Every IYT scholar must complete a full-time internship of at least 3 months at an Italian partner company or professional trade association. The internship is a formal part of the programme and must be completed by June 1 of the relevant academic year. The IYT Technical Committee, your university's career services, or your own independent search (with committee approval) can all be used to find your internship placement.

🔄

Scholarship Renewal (Year 2)

Conditional on 30+ ECTS

Students enrolled in a two-year Laurea Magistrale programme can apply for scholarship renewal for the second year. To renew, you must: earn at least 30 ECTS credits by July 20 of the first year, complete the mandatory Italian language course attendance, and complete your internship. Renewal applications are submitted on the IYT platform.

📚

Gender Equality Modules

Included

The programme includes dedicated academic modules on gender equality and social responsibility, reflecting the Italian government's commitment to inclusive education. Attendance is part of the programme requirements.

What Is NOT Covered

Important Exclusions

The IYT scholarship does NOT cover: accommodation, international travel to/from Italy, health insurance (you must subscribe to a health insurance policy yourself), visa fees, accident insurance, or daily living expenses beyond the €1,000 monthly stipend. These must be planned and funded independently.

🏠

Health Insurance

Not Included — Mandatory Purchase

IYT scholarship conditions explicitly require recipients to subscribe to a health insurance policy covering illness and accidents for the duration of their scholarship. This is not provided by the programme. EU/EEA students can use their EHIC card; non-EU students should purchase an international student health plan (typically €150–€300/year).

🇮🇹 Real cost of living in Italy on the IYT Scholarship

With €1,000/month and full tuition coverage, your main expenses are accommodation (~€400–€700/month depending on city), food (~€250–€400/month), health insurance (~€150–€300/year), and local transport (~€30–€60/month). Milan and Rome are the most expensive cities; smaller university cities like Brescia, Parma, Camerino, and Macerata are significantly cheaper. Most IYT scholars manage on the stipend but may need to supplement with savings, especially in their first month before the first quarterly payment arrives. Budget for at least €3,000–€5,000 in pre-arrival savings to cover initial setup costs (housing deposit, visa, flights, insurance, first month's living expenses before payment).

The Internship Component — What You Need to Know

The mandatory internship is the defining feature that sets the IYT Scholarship apart from every other Italian government scholarship programme. It is not optional, not theoretical, and not a formality — it is a core obligation written into the scholarship contract.

Who Provides the Internship?

The internship must be completed at an Italian company or professional trade association that is a partner of the IYT programme. There are three routes to securing your internship:

  • IYT Technical Committee direct placement: The IYT Committee can directly assign you to a partner company. This may require you to relocate to a different Italian city from your university.
  • University Career Services: Many participating universities have dedicated career offices and partnerships with IYT-eligible companies that can connect you with suitable placements.
  • Independent search (with approval): You can find your own internship company, but it must be approved by the IYT Technical Committee. The company must be registered in Italy and relevant to your field of study.

⚠️ Critical internship rules every IYT applicant must know

You cannot do your thesis research abroad while on the IYT scholarship — all academic work, including thesis research, must be conducted in Italy. You cannot participate in Erasmus+ exchange programmes or other international mobility programmes offered by your university during the scholarship period. The IYT programme's commitment level (ECTS targets + Italian language course + internship) is specifically designed to require full-time engagement in Italy.

For Laurea Magistrale students, the internship must be completed by June 1, 2027. Plan your academic and internship timeline carefully — starting your internship search in your first semester is strongly advised.

Eligible Countries — Who Can Apply?

The IYT Scholarship 2026 is exclusively open to citizens who are permanently residing in one of the following 23 countries. Both citizenship and permanent residency in the eligible country are required — you cannot apply if you are a citizen of an eligible country but are currently residing in Italy or another non-eligible country.

🇦🇷 Argentina 🇦🇲 Armenia 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan 🇧🇩 Bangladesh 🇧🇷 Brazil 🇨🇱 Chile 🇨🇴 Colombia 🇪🇬 Egypt 🇪🇹 Ethiopia 🇬🇭 Ghana 🇮🇳 India 🇮🇩 Indonesia 🇮🇷 Iran 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan 🇲🇽 Mexico 🇲🇳 Mongolia 🇵🇾 Paraguay 🇵🇪 Peru 🇨🇳 China (P.R.) 🇹🇳 Tunisia 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇺🇾 Uruguay 🇻🇳 Vietnam

🚫 Residency requirement — citizenship alone is not enough

You must be both a citizen of one of the 23 eligible countries AND permanently residing there at the time of application. If you are a citizen of an eligible country but are currently studying, working, or living abroad (including in Italy), you do not meet the residency requirement. This is strictly enforced and verified by the IYT Technical Committee.

Full Eligibility Requirements for the IYT Scholarship 2026

Academic Qualification

You must hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent that is valid for enrolment in a Master's or postgraduate degree at the chosen Italian university. Your Bachelor's degree must not have been awarded by an Italian university — students who graduated from an Italian institution are not eligible. Students who are currently enrolled at an Italian university are also excluded.

Students who have completed all their Bachelor's exams but have not yet received the physical diploma may submit an official academic registry certificate on university letterhead confirming their degree completion and listing their grades. This is accepted as proof of qualification.

Age Limit

Applicants must be born on or after January 1, 1999 (for the 2026/2027 edition). This means you must be 27 years old or younger at the time of application. Candidates applying for scholarship renewal from the previous year are not subject to the age restriction.

English Language Proficiency

A language certificate proving English proficiency at a minimum of B2 level (CEFR) is mandatory. Accepted certificates include IELTS, TOEFL iBT, TOEIC, Cambridge B2 First (FCE), and other internationally recognised tests. If your Bachelor's degree was conducted entirely in English, a certificate issued by your university confirming that English was the language of instruction may be accepted as proof at C1 level — but always verify this with the specific university you are applying to.

Italian Language

Italian language proficiency is not required to apply. All eligible courses are taught in English. However, applicants must attach either: (a) a recognised Italian language certificate (e.g. PLIDA, CILS, CELI at any level), or (b) a signed declaration of commitment to study Italian before departure. This declaration is a standard document available on the IYT portal. Note that while Italian is not required for admission, practical conversational Italian significantly helps during the internship and daily life in Italy.

Pre-Application to the University

Before submitting your IYT scholarship application, you must first submit a pre-admission application to your chosen university and course through that university's own admissions process. The IYT scholarship is only accessible if your university evaluates and confirms that your academic background is relevant and appropriate for the chosen Master's programme. Each university has its own pre-application procedures and deadlines — always check the individual university's admissions page first.

Who Is NOT Eligible?

  • Citizens of countries not on the 23-country eligible list
  • Citizens of eligible countries who are not permanently residing in their eligible country at the time of application
  • Students currently enrolled at any Italian university
  • Students who have already obtained an Italian university qualification
  • Undergraduate (Bachelor's level) students — only Master's and postgraduate level is eligible
  • Students born before January 1, 1999 (for the 2026 edition)
  • Students applying to more than one course — only one application per person is permitted
  • Students currently receiving any other Italian government scholarship or public financial aid

How to Apply for the Invest Your Talent in Italy Scholarship — Step-by-Step Guide

The IYT Scholarship application process has two distinct phases: a university pre-application and the IYT platform application. Both must be completed before the May 11, 2026 deadline. Starting both in parallel — not sequentially — is essential, since university pre-application deadlines may be earlier than the IYT deadline.

⚠️ The one rule that disqualifies most applicants before they start

You can apply for only ONE course on the IYT platform. This is strictly enforced — using multiple email addresses to submit multiple applications is detected and results in automatic rejection of all your applications. Choose your single course wisely before opening the IYT portal. No exceptions are made.

  1. Browse the full IYT course catalogue and choose ONE programme (March–April)
Visit the official IYT course list at investyourtalentapplication.esteri.it/SitoIYT/EN/courses. Browse all 250+ available Master's courses across Engineering, Architecture, and Economics at participating universities. Research each programme carefully — consider the university's reputation in your field, the city (cost of living, internship opportunities, lifestyle), and the specific curriculum. You get only one application attempt, so your programme choice is one of the most consequential decisions in this process.
  2. Submit your pre-application to the chosen university (as early as possible)
Before applying on the IYT portal, you must first submit a pre-admission application to your chosen university through their own admissions process. Each university has different procedures, forms, and deadlines for this pre-application — some require it weeks before the IYT deadline. Visit the admissions page of your chosen university and complete their pre-application process. The IYT platform will ask you to confirm that you have done this. Without a valid pre-application to the university, your IYT scholarship application is not considered.
  3. Prepare all required documents (March–April)
Use the document checklist tool above to prepare all materials. Key documents include: Bachelor's degree certificate (or academic registry certificate if your diploma is not yet issued), final transcript of all Bachelor's exams with grades, valid passport, CV, English language certificate (IELTS/TOEFL/TOEIC at B2+), Italian language certificate or declaration of commitment, and your motivation video. Documents must be in English, Italian, French, or Spanish — or accompanied by official certified translation.
  4. Create your account on the IYT application portal (when open)
Register at investyourtalentapplication.esteri.it. Create your account using your personal email address — this will be the address where all communications, including your scholarship offer, will be sent. Ensure your personal details exactly match your passport. Do not use a university or institutional email address that may expire.
  5. Record and upload your motivation video (most critical step)
Create a motivation video of no more than 1 minute in MP4 format, under 10 MB in file size. The video must explain: why you want to study in Italy, what motivates you to pursue your chosen programme, and how the IYT experience (including the internship) aligns with your career goals. This video is the only personal, differentiated element in your application and is evaluated directly by the IYT Technical Committee. See the detailed video tips section below.
  6. Complete and submit your IYT online application (before May 11, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. Italian time)
Fill in your complete online application on the IYT portal. Select your chosen programme (remember: one only), upload all required documents, and submit your motivation video. Confirm that your personal details match your passport exactly. Submit well before the deadline — last-minute technical issues are not grounds for extension. The deadline is strict: May 11, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. Italian time.
  7. University admissions evaluation
After the IYT application deadline, the university evaluates whether your academic background is relevant and appropriate for the chosen Master's programme. This is an admissions assessment — not all IYT applicants are admitted to the programme. Being admitted to the programme is a prerequisite for receiving the IYT scholarship.
  8. IYT Technical Committee evaluation and selection (May–July 2026)
The IYT Technical Committee — comprising representatives from MAECI, the Ministry of University and Research, ITA/ICE, and Uni-Italia — evaluates all admitted applicants and selects scholarship recipients based on academic excellence, motivation (including the video), and overall eligibility. Selection results are communicated via email in summer 2026.
  9. Accept your scholarship offer within 3 days
If selected, you will receive a scholarship offer email. You have exactly 3 days to accept and sign the commitment letter. No extensions are given under any circumstances. If you are on the waiting list, you will be notified if a placed scholar declines and a spot opens. Treat the results email as the most important message of your application cycle — check your inbox and spam folder daily from June onwards.
  10. Apply for your Italian student visa and arrange your move
With your IYT acceptance letter and university admission confirmation, apply for an Italian long-stay student visa (Type D) at your nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate. Begin your housing search immediately — popular university cities like Milan, Rome, and Bologna have competitive housing markets. Studies begin October 1, 2026.

How to Make a Winning IYT Motivation Video

The 1-minute motivation video is the single most differentiating element of the IYT scholarship application. Unlike grades and transcripts, which are fixed, the video is something you can actively optimise. The Technical Committee watches hundreds of videos — yours needs to stand out for substance, clarity, and genuine motivation, not production quality.

Technical Requirements (Non-Negotiable)

  • Format: MP4 only. No MOV, AVI, or other formats.
  • Duration: No more than 1 minute. Cut precisely — do not run over.
  • File size: Under 10 MB. Compress your video if needed using a free tool like HandBrake or an online compressor.
  • Language: English (since your programme will be in English). Speaking in Italian is not required and will not give you an advantage unless your Italian is genuinely strong.

What to Say — A Proven Structure

  1. 0:00–0:10 — Who you are (name, country, Bachelor's background in 1–2 sentences)
  2. 0:10–0:25 — Why this programme (specific reasons this Master's at this university fits your academic and professional interests — be specific, not generic)
  3. 0:25–0:45 — Why Italy and the IYT internship (why Italy specifically — its industry ecosystem, innovation culture — and how the mandatory internship connects to your career goals)
  4. 0:45–1:00 — Your future contribution (how your IYT experience will benefit your country, industry, or community on return — this resonates strongly with the programme's bilateral ties mission)

✅ Video tips from past IYT recipients

Past IYT scholars consistently highlight three things that made their videos work: (1) specificity — naming the exact programme, university, and why that combination, not Italy in general; (2) internship awareness — showing you understand and genuinely welcome the internship component, ideally referencing a specific Italian industry sector you want to work in; and (3) authenticity — the committee responds to genuine motivation over scripted delivery. Film in a quiet, well-lit space, speak clearly, and look at the camera. No elaborate production is needed.

Tips for Winning the Invest Your Talent in Italy Scholarship

🎯 What the IYT Technical Committee evaluates

The IYT selection is made by a multi-ministry committee. They evaluate: (1) academic excellence — your GPA and grade transcript quality, (2) motivation — your video and the coherence of your programme choice with your background, (3) language readiness — English certificate level and any Italian proficiency, and (4) fit — whether your academic background matches the programme you applied for. The committee has noted publicly that strong candidates combine excellent grades with a clear, specific motivation and genuine readiness for the internship and Italian experience.

  • Choose your one programme with extreme care. You have one application and one course choice. Research the programme thoroughly — read the course structure, faculty profiles, and recent graduates' LinkedIn profiles. Pick the programme that most closely matches your academic background and career goals, not simply the most famous university. A perfect-fit application to a slightly less famous programme often outperforms a generic application to a top name.
  • Apply early to both the university and the IYT portal. University pre-application deadlines often precede the May 11 IYT deadline. Contact the international or admissions office of your chosen university in February or March to confirm their exact pre-application procedure and timeline. Missing the university deadline makes your IYT application invalid regardless of your IYT submission.
  • Obtain your English certificate as early as possible. IELTS and TOEFL registration slots book up weeks in advance in many IYT-eligible countries. Book your test in January or February to ensure your certificate is available before the application deadline. If your Bachelor's was in English, request the English-medium instruction certificate from your university's registry early — these can take 2–4 weeks.
  • Prepare your Bachelor's transcripts and translations in advance. If your academic documents are not in English, Italian, French, or Spanish, certified translation by a sworn translator is required. This process takes 2–4 weeks in many countries. Start gathering and translating your transcripts in March at the latest.
  • Make your CV stand out with relevant Italian industry context. When listing skills, projects, or experience, explicitly connect them to the Italian industry ecosystem — for Engineering, mention Italian manufacturing or automation; for Design, reference Italian design heritage; for Economics, note Italian market dynamics. Demonstrating awareness of Italy's industry context shows genuine preparation.
  • Start learning Italian — even basic conversational level helps enormously during the internship. While Italian is not a formal selection criterion, every past IYT scholar who discusses the internship experience emphasises that basic Italian significantly improves their internship and daily life quality. Apps like Duolingo, Babbel, or a short pre-departure Italian course from your university all help. It also signals commitment to the IYT committee.
  • Budget for the first months carefully. The first quarterly stipend payment arrives after enrolment, which may be several weeks after your arrival. Budget for at least €3,000–€5,000 in savings to cover initial costs (flight, visa, housing deposit, first month's living expenses, health insurance, and orientation costs) before your first IYT payment arrives.
  • Run parallel applications to country-agnostic Italian scholarships. If you don't receive the IYT scholarship, the MAECI Government Scholarship and the University of Padua Excellence Scholarship (if applicable to your programme) are strong alternatives for students from IYT-eligible countries. Start both simultaneously rather than waiting for IYT results.

After Receiving the IYT Scholarship — What Happens Next?

  • Sign the commitment letter within 3 days: This is absolute — no extension is possible. The commitment letter formalises your acceptance of the scholarship conditions, including the internship obligation, Italian language course attendance, ECTS targets, and incompatibility with other Italian public scholarships.
  • Italian student visa (Type D): Apply at the nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country. Bring your IYT award letter, university admission confirmation, proof of accommodation, and financial means documentation. The visa fee and application process are not covered by the scholarship. Allow 4–8 weeks for processing.
  • Enrolment at your university: Complete formal enrolment at your chosen Italian university for your selected Master's programme. Your first scholarship instalment will be released after enrolment and document submission are confirmed.
  • First quarterly stipend payment: After enrolment, your first payment of approximately €3,000 (3 months × €1,000) is released. Open an Italian bank account (Conto Corrente) immediately upon arrival — Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit, and BancoPosta are popular with international students.
  • Italian language course attendance: Attendance is mandatory and tracked. Treat this as a programme requirement, not optional enrichment. Failing to meet attendance requirements can affect scholarship continuation.
  • Internship placement (start early): Begin your internship search in your first semester. Talk to your university's career services about IYT-eligible companies in your field. The IYT Technical Committee can also make a direct placement — contact them early if you need assistance.
  • Renewal application (for Laurea Magistrale Year 2): If your programme is a 2-year Master's, submit your renewal application on the IYT platform by July 20 of your first year. You must upload: your university transcript showing at least 30 ECTS credits earned, and a certificate of Italian language course attendance from your university. Meeting both conditions is required for renewal — there are no exceptions.
  • Completing the internship: The internship must be completed by June 1, 2027 for Laurea Magistrale students. Begin the arrangement process in your first semester — do not leave it to the second year. Both self-arranged and committee-placed internships require advance coordination.
  • After graduation: IYT scholars who return to their home countries become part of the broader Italy Alumni network — a community of internationally trained professionals with established ties to Italian industry, government, and culture.

Frequently Asked Questions — Invest Your Talent in Italy Scholarship

Can I apply for the IYT Scholarship if I am currently living or studying abroad (outside my eligible country)?
No. The IYT Scholarship requires you to be a citizen of one of the 23 eligible countries AND to be permanently residing there at the time of application. If you are currently studying or living in a country other than your eligible home country — including in Italy — you are not eligible. This is verified by the IYT Technical Committee and strictly enforced.
Can I apply for two different programmes in the same IYT application cycle?
No. The IYT rules explicitly allow only one application per candidate. Submitting multiple applications through different email addresses is detected and results in the rejection of all your applications. You must choose a single programme and submit one application. A limited exception exists for limited-enrolment (numero chiuso) programmes, where a second automatic choice appears during the application — but this is only for backup in the same field, not a second programme of your choice.
Is there an interview as part of the IYT Scholarship selection?
The standard IYT selection process is based on your written application and motivation video — there is no centralised interview stage managed by the IYT Committee. However, some individual universities may conduct admissions interviews as part of their own pre-application evaluation, separate from the IYT scholarship process. Check with your chosen university.
What happens if I don't complete the mandatory internship?
The internship is a core contractual obligation under the IYT scholarship terms. Failure to complete the mandatory 3-month internship by the required deadline constitutes a breach of the scholarship conditions and may result in revocation of the scholarship and a requirement to repay amounts already received. The IYT Technical Committee takes this obligation seriously — begin your internship search in your first semester.
Can I combine the IYT Scholarship with Italian regional DSU grants?
This is a grey area that requires careful verification. The IYT scholarship is explicitly incompatible with any other scholarship or financial aid provided by the Italian government or Italian public institutions. Regional DSU grants are funded by regional governments and may be considered separate from national-level funding in some interpretations. You must consult the IYT Technical Committee and your regional DSU office directly before accepting both. Do not assume compatibility without written confirmation.
Is the IYT Scholarship available for PhD students?
No. The IYT Scholarship is exclusively for Master's degree (Laurea Magistrale) and postgraduate courses (Master Universitario). PhD/Doctoral students are not eligible. Students seeking Italian government support for doctoral research should explore the MAECI Government Scholarship, which covers PhD level.
What is the difference between a Laurea Magistrale and a Master Universitario in the IYT context?
A Laurea Magistrale is a 2-year national academic degree (equivalent to a European Master's) awarded by Italian state universities — eligible for IYT scholarship renewal in the second year. A Master Universitario is a post-degree professional programme (1 or 2 years) awarded by universities but not a national academic degree — the IYT scholarship covers one academic year, and renewal eligibility depends on the programme duration and the current Call for Applications. Check the specific Call for your edition.
Do I need to find my own internship or will the IYT programme find one for me?
There are three routes: (1) the IYT Technical Committee may directly assign you to a partner company, (2) your university's career services can connect you with IYT-eligible companies, or (3) you can search independently and get your chosen company approved by the IYT Committee. None of these routes is guaranteed or automatic — you must actively pursue your internship from your first semester. The Committee will not arrange an internship for students who wait until the last minute.
Can I do Erasmus+ or study abroad while on the IYT Scholarship?
No. The IYT scholarship explicitly prohibits participation in Erasmus+ or any other international mobility programme offered by your university during the scholarship period. You also cannot carry out thesis research abroad. All study, including thesis work, must be conducted at your university in Italy. The IYT programme's requirements — ECTS targets, Italian language course, and internship — are designed for full-time engagement in Italy.
What if I receive the IYT Scholarship but then get a better offer from another programme?
You have 3 days from receiving your IYT offer to accept or decline. If you decline, the scholarship is offered to the next candidate on the waiting list. There is no penalty for declining, but once you have signed the commitment letter and accepted, withdrawal may trigger scholarship repayment obligations. Review all your pending applications before your IYT results arrive and be prepared to make an immediate decision.
